I do not mind the popcorn and in talking to someone about removing the popcorn said there were different qualities of popcorn-some were more hardened and easier to paint than a softer kind that flaked. Does anyone have any experience with how easy (or hard) it would be to paint a ceiling applied in 1996?

We won't be in the home again until closing and are trying to make plans.

There were a couple of involved threads about removing the popcorn ceilings earlier this year or last year. You might want to try a search for popcorn ceilings. It would definitely be something you would want to do before you move in as it is a very messy job.
