Our ONLY choices were to go inside where smoking is not permitted, or leave completely. He had every right to sit on the patio and smoke. People at the public squares are "requested" NOT to smoke on the inner part of the square where dancers gather, but have every right to smoke outside on public land... or at least that's how I have always understood "smoking" areas all over the USA ? My most terrifying memories of childhood were being on flights with my parents (also non smokers) and thinking I was going to actually DIE from the smoke that always got even worse on the plane as soon as we finished meals. Those "meals" were served on REAL plates with REAL flatware, no plastic "sporks", but at age 8-10 was aware that as soon as we ate our food, the adults would be lighting their cigarettes... LOL. They might still smoke at public shopping squares here and everywhere, but at least not on planes anymore !
