It's interesting that the county was named after Sumter, as I don't think he had any real connection to Florida. And Florida was loyal to Great Britain during the Revolutionary War.
Of course, I don't know the back story, there could be much more that explains this.
He is also known for Fort Sumter being named after him, which is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.
