Been there (situation, not location). Done that. The tailgater realized the error of his ways and backed way off. Tailgaters are a very real danger as they can't see what you see. They may not, for many reasons, be able to react if you need to or if you stop for any reason (physical, mechanical, etc). At best, they are annoying jerks. At worst, they are a threat to life and limb. Not just to the one they are 'gating, but to others on or near the highway as well. They are their own worst enemy. Sitting in a ditch is his own fault. Go back? Way too dangerous, for many reasons.
