Traveler is acceptable.
I called them Irish to differentiate between non-Irish 'travelers' most of whom do not work, just live a very alternate lifestyle, supported by state benefits, and scrounging.

Many years ago when I worked on farms, we had the same families of true Romany Gypsies, not travelers, with horse and caravans come each year to pick up potatoes, until machines put them out of a job.
It's a complicated world to sort out.
