1. You didn't read much about Tonga, because the media refuses to talk about it, because its "water vapor" is causing the 2023-2024 warming spike -- and heaven forbid the public hears that water vapor is causing global warming -- because water vapor is the monster greenhouse gas.
2. Assumptions are fun to make, but again, data trumps those too. First - Tonga is causing about 0.8 C (or 1.4 degree F) warming, and is expected to very slowly cool because the water vapor was sent much higher into the stratosphere than Pinatubo's ash. The stratosphere is very stable and the water vapor will linger for years. Second - Pinatubo's ash is very different than Tonga's water vapor. Ash is not only heavier, but it was lower in the atmosphere - and thus fell out faster. The water vapor is still spreading globally (vertically and horizontally).
