I heard once that a very good way to save water is "don't flush it unless it floats". Seems to me that one can kill two birds here. Conserve water by not flushing until the bowl contains floaters, and then when you DO flush, use that murky gray bath water you've been keeping in various buckets and jugs. Just pour it directly into the bowl: putting it in the tank first is not necessary.

my daughter picked that up in college, & tried to implement that in our home.
i did freak out & require a flush each time, BUT the new washer makes up for it, it cut the water bill by a third! so i'm kind of balanced out, lol
