Just a thought as I know plexiglass can be cut, but its also susceptible to cracking if not done correctly. .

This would be a lot of work, especially if the slots needed to be smoothed. Cutting or drilling plexiglass seems to require some lubricant to avoid the material heating up too much and melting. I use water most of the time. Actually it would probably be easier to save the bottom piece with the slots, and replace the top piece, but I have NOT tried to do this.
