Hurricanes are not new.
Here is a story from almost 500 years ago. Hurricanes have been around much longer than 1528, but it becomes more difficult to find written history about them.
1528: Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was part of an expedition that was caught in a hurricane while attempting to sail across the Gulf of Mexico to New Spain. Three of the boats were lost, and the other two washed up on Galveston Island, Texas.
Sounds like a pretty powerful storm to me. These of course being very seaworthy boats that had already crossed the Atlantic.
