In my experience, most opthalmologists do not do exams for eyeglasses. If they offer the service (which they call refraction), it will be done by a non-doctor technician. I visit an ophthalmologist annually to check for eye diseases, but I get my eyeglass exam from an optometrist, who is a licensed doctor.
