More like some folks *feel* that is how email is supposed to work in spite of the reality that email, like texting, is a common method of real time communication.
You don’t want to check email throughout the day? Fine, that’s your choice. You may miss things but again, that’s your choice. I choose to send all unknown callers to voicemail and I’ve missed things because of that.
