We are looking to downsize to 1300-1500 sq feet and an Amarillo model seems to offer the footprint we would like with the exception of the air handler location. Husband is adamant that if the air handler is not in the garage he is not willing to consider the house.
I have seen some that are enclosed with bi-fold doors or even a closet-like enclosure but still in the laundry area.
Your comments please? Thank you.

We have an Amarillo with the HVAC in the area between the kitchen and garage. We simply close the door to that area and it cuts off any noise. No other doors are required.
The key, however, is that our large return air grate is high in the living room, away from the HVAC noise. We had a friend who had a similar model but the large return air grate was right in the wall next to the HVAC (facing the kitchen). That let the noise into the living unit and they had to close their adjacent bedroom door at night for peace and quiet
Another thing to consider: We moved the washer and dryer from that area to the garage. That gave us the space to buy a couple of large cabinets (creating a pantry) from IKEA that fit perfectly. However, as a couple of people have mentioned, the garage is going to be humid and this can cause problems. Our washer, which is a fairly low end GE model, has been subject to some rust on the lid which we've been able to touch up from time to time. You can imagine what it will do to an HVAC unit out there. Dealing with the minor washer rust problem is worth it to us because the addition of the pantry cabinets is great.
