For taxes, I save a copy of the return as a pdf file. I can review that whenever I need to and can print it if I ever have to. I also acquire pdf versions of any document I require for preparing my taxes and keep them alongside the return. I *should* be in good shape without needing the software again.
At the same time, I have a folder with the install files for all the previous versions of the tax preparation software. Since there are usually many updates to this software between the time I buy it in November/December and filing time in April, reinstalling the software will require the updates to be available on the developer's website. I assume the updates will be available but I've never tested that.

If you ever need to file an amended return, you will need the software program and the program tax return file, both for that tax year. The pdf file will not work. Also, an earlier or later version of the program will not work. Usually, amended returns can be filed within 3 years after the original return was due. That is why it is important to keep the software program and the tax return file for 3 years.
