I don't miss months of icy cold and short days. I miss the experience of HAVING icy cold and short days though, if that makes sense. Distinct season changes. The experience of the freeze, then the thaw, then growth, then the preparing for the freeze.
I think ideally I'd love a place where you'd have a winter lasting just two months, with maybe a foot or two of snow total over that period of time. And summer lasting just two months, with that super hot, sultry pea-soup humidity lasting just a few days during that period of time. Autumn could last 4 months, with endless fall colors. And spring, the same.
Sadly no such place exists on this planet. But I'm okay with short bursts of cold. Bundling up, being cozy and appreciating being warm inside the house, maybe putting a pot of water with eucalyptus to simmer on the stovetop, tossing a log in the fireplace, and watching it snow outside. Heck even shoveling is fun if the snow isn't too deep and isn't turning to ice on your windshield.
