Rust is iron oxide
Iron oxide is the byproduct of chemical reaction between iron and oxygen, usually in the presence of water
The chemical reaction which generates iron oxide weakens the underlying iron by consuming it
A chemical reaction which converts a refined metal into an oxide is called corrosion
You don't see corrosion, you see the byproduct of corrosion. "Rust" is the byproduct of iron corrosion. If you see rust then you know corrosion is occurring.
