Wire brush the threads, paint on the black POR 15. Three coats. Use a search engine to find it. Available in quarts or six pack of small cans. Pricey. Do not get it on your hands. Avoid the fumes. Leftover material is useless unless the can is perfectly sealed after use. I transfer leftover POR 15 to a small glass jar sealed in plastic for preservation for future use. Commonly used for car frame, car rust restoration. The best stuff available. I wear a respirator and gloves when using it. Good luck rusty metal restorers.

Would old fashioned Navel Gel, or the grease like product you coat battery connectors with to prevent corrosion be a less dangerous solution than something like the POR 15 that requires such drastic measures ?
