Your experience is very typical for older golfers. We seem to be distance sensitive until we find the distance that allows to reach at least 16-17 holes in Regulation ... & don't seem to play any better, if we move forward another Tee Box.

I've always though the GHIN system needed to do more, to address the weakness of older golfers ... which always seems to be distance. Anywhere from 5500 yards to 6300 yards, I'm going to shoot the same score. Put me at 6400, my score is going up 5 strokes.

No matter what distance you play at, you still need to make 28-34 Putts, so unless you move up to 5000 yards and can drive some Par 4's, there's no advantage at 5500 IMO.
