There is a multi media tank. This is where the filtration happens. There is a tank for the potassium chloride. Every x amount of gallons of water used or days, the brine tank with the potassium chloride creates the brine and regenerates the media tank. (cleans the media). Once a year, you have them do a maintance for 109.00. They change o rings and run it etc. I have the Kinetico RO system in my home up north. Very nice system, It was pretty expensive. I'm just as happy with this Pegasus system. The water quality is great. No smells or off tastes... The multi stage filters in the Kinetico system need changed periodically. We do it ourselves but they are pretty expensive. The pegasus system seems more economical once installed.
I'm glad you are happy with your Pegasus system. Although it works well, the problem with that design is the charcoal filter is built into the softener and is not easily changed. You need the charcoal filter not only to filter the water but to remove the chlorine which damages the softener media over time. If this charcoal filter gets clogged or goes bad, which happens, it's a very labor intensive job to replace it. Often you don't know this has occured unless you smell or taste chlorine so it damages the softener prematurely. Also, the cost of the Pegasus is very expensive compared to many of it's competitors such as the Nova system which will give you the same result for about half the cost. Also, the Nova system has external filters like the Kinetico so they can easily be replaced.
