Since you state these are solid high-quality pieces, IMHO I would sand and refinish, as I really like a good wood finish. But if you are set on going with paint you will still need to completely remove the existing finish, sand and completely clean the surface (no dust etc.). I would then proceed with using a high-quality spray paint to refinish. I would avoid using a brush or similar due to dripping or running. I have done this several times and it is generally a time intensive process.
If you do not find a person or company to do this you might look into selling the furniture and look into the used furniture stores, we have found some really nice buys at these.
