These drugs work by reducing reducing insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) so it's a completely new way to try for longevity. You can reduce it with diet, exercise, and possibly intermittent fasting or calorie restriction...but who wants to do that, right? Lower IGF-1 levels may lead to longer, good quality life. This is what the trials are attempting to show.
The biggest reason I'm excited about this drug is that their director of veterinary medicine, Brennon McKenzie, is an outspoken proponent of evidence based medicine. I'm sure if this becomes "a thing" there will be plenty of hard data to support its use.
