This was used primarily between the late 70's to mid 90's in mostly southern homes. Cost was the driving factor but unfortunately the composition of the pipes breaks down with age causing voluminous amounts of water to possibly enter your humble abode. Not good.
I'd suspect the cost wouldn't be cheap to replace existing plumbing. My only suggestion would be to contact a local plumber.
