I agree with you, but the OP did not provide sufficient info, so I am assuming a relatively smooth existing finish, which could become very slippery when sealed.
Also, I forgot to add, the OP needs to make sure the new sealer is compatible with any existing finish and needs to be applied during periods of low humidity to avoid moisture getting trapped in the new coating which can cause cloudiness in the finish.
