Lightning strike blows thermostat off wall at home in The Villages
by Staff Report
June 15, 2025

A lightning strike blew a thermostat off the wall Saturday night at a home in The Villages.

The Villages Public Safety Department responded a report of a lightning strike at the home at 7664 Rutherford Lane in the Village of Shady Brook.

This home at 7664 Rutherford Lane in the Village of Shady Brook showed no major damage from the lightning strike

There was slight damage to the roof of the home at 7666 Rutherford Lane.

Upon arrival, firefighters spotted debris on the roof from where the house was hit. The attic was checked, but no hazards were found.

The home, occupied by a renter, sustained a loss of power and the thermostat was blown off the wall. SECO Energy was contacted to restore power.

The home is owned by a couple in Massachusetts, who also have a second property in The Villages.

Lightning destroyed a house in May in the Village of Winifred.

From the comments:
We are living in a lightning rich area of the country. That is why I spent the few thousand dollars it cost to put lightning rods on my home. In the first year it paid off. We were hit but the rods directed the current to the ground. But it did blow one of the heavy half inch wires apart. That was an easy fix, much easier than replacing a house.
