Funny thing is that back then there were no great whites on the Cape and Islands, including Martha’s Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed. Since then, the bounty on seals was lifted and the seal population has exploded, attracting numerous great white sharks. My family had a summer home in Quogue, Long Island, NY. The summer Peter Benchley wrote Jaws, he was in Quogue. Many things in the book are in Quogue. He may have said Martha's Vineyard, but the book was written about Quogue. That would explain why there were no Great Whites in MA
I'll never forget seeing it, my boyfriend and I went to the theater in Darien, CT. There were only a few seats left and they were in the very front row..... it was terrifying!
