We've used the autotrain a bunch of times. For us it works well because we stay with our son in Towson, MD the night before and only have 1.5 hr drive the next day. I figure it is worth whatever it cost because if we were to drive down either I would murder my husband or he would murder me -- we still aren't sure who would lose it first. At the very least our marriage just would not survive.
We usually get a roomette and my husband (skinny and still very flexible) sleeps in the top bunk. I compare the cost with what it would cost to fly and rent a car. I try to time when we bring a load of stuff down to when we are staying long enough to take the train.
