To me it's the same as pulling in with a car instead of backing in.

It's about the math.

100% of the time when you back out of a spot you'll wait for a clearing (i.e. no cars or carts approaching).

50% of the time when you go to park somewhere you'll have a car/cart behind you who may not realize that you are pulling past the spot to back in. Haven't you seen the Seinfeld episode about this?

I think it's common sense not personal preference. I think it is simply more dangerous.
