Putting lighting and outlets on the same circuit is generally something to avoid if possible although its done commonly in remodels for convenience.

yup, just finished an electrical renovation of my parent's 60 year old house. Electricians back then didn't know hair dryers were coming or that there were anything other than two 100 watt light bulbs per any sized room. Next week they are coming back for an overloaded circuit after I had them add overhead ceiling lights to the existing circuit. . my mistake, but the whole wiring 60 years ago was pretty lame, with a single circuit handling multiple floors.
