As soon as I read the original comment, I scrolled back up to see who wrote it ... to see if they had lived in CA. I'm from CA originally.
I actually discussed this with someone just a few days ago again the whole thing out there when the waitress says, "Would you like a coke?" And the reply, "Yeah, sure. I'll have a Pepsi."
Too funny. Don't know why that's a thing, or was when I was a kid. Definitely a regional thing. Didn't know they did that in the South, too.
