I actually discussed this with someone just a few days ago again the whole thing out there when the waitress says, "Would you like a coke?" And the reply, "Yeah, sure. I'll have a Pepsi."
Too funny. Don't know why that's a thing, or was when I was a kid. Definitely a regional thing. Didn't know they did that in the South, too.

Native Californian here, and I’ve always said soda or soft drink. Not once in three years here has any server ever asked me anything except “what would you like to drink”. Hubby is from MI so I’m familiar with pop from visiting his family there.
