It seemed like a brilliant idea at the time. I placed their bags carefully on the floor of the back seat and drove off, basking in the glow of my ingenuity.
Halfway to the vet's office the kitties started breaking loose. A paper grocery bag is no match for kitty claws. Soon I had a cat on the head, on the back of the seat, another clawing at the window, and one trying to hide under the brake pedal... People in the car next to me at the stoplight were pointing and staring. I had cat hair up my nose. Blood was drawn. It wasn't a pretty sight. And the entire time I worried that I would be pulled over for inattentive driving. How on earth could I explain it? How could I give the officer my license and registration without opening the window and letting the kitties escape? I couldn't risk opening the door when I got to the vet's. I had to sit in the parking lot until somebody came out, so I could ask them to go back inside and tell the vet folks I needed more cardboard cat carriers.
Lessons learned:
Five cats is 3 too many for a trip to the vet's.
Cardboard is stronger than paper, but Samsonite would have been even better.
Oven mitts would have been useful. They're not just for baking.
