The engine revving when you are neutral for a short time should not hurt the engine, and even if you have to risk it, my life and the lives of all the innocent drivers on or along the highway is far more important.
I agree. At the time of an emergency like that, the last thing I would think of is the damage to the engine. Hit the brakes - switch to neutral - stop the car - then turn it off - while at the same time trying to make sure you did not hit anyone and they did not hit you.
