Default DST in the "old" days

I know there are some other old St. Louisans on this board who might remember this, and maybe some of you also had this in other big cities:

When I was a kid, only St. Louis and Kansas City (as I remember it) had DST in the summer, while the rest of Missouri stayed on standard time. We referred to the city as being on "fast time" and the rest of the state on "slow time."

If we would travel outside the metro area, my father would always point out that we were now in the "slow time" part of the state and wouldn't have "fast time" until we got back to the city. Of course, we felt we were superior to the poor "slow timers" because for half the year, we were "ahead" of them.

As for now, chalk me up in the column favoring daylight saving time because of the longer evenings of light.

Even at this age, I like to think I'm still "fast."
