Boomer, remember darkrooms? This is the way it was explained to me in the photography part of my life: Back in the days of the silver image, the newest invention was to package darkroom chemicals in boxes that would let you release the chemicals without letting the air in to oxidize them. The wine folks (many of whom spent too many hours inhaling darkroom chemicals) thought the boxes should work for wine, too. Voila! Drunken darkroom developers!
I have no idea if this is true. I do know that darkroom chemicals in a box and wine in a box happened around the same time, but which came first?  Who, hic, cares? hic
