I'm originally from the suburbs of Philly, and I know what you are craving. Believe it or not, the closest thing to a South Philly Hoagie can be purchased at the deli in Publix. You have to walk them through the process, but they will follow your directions, and you will love the results.

Ask them to pick the chewiest "sub" roll that they have, and tell them to put the oil on the split roll first (no vinegar, just oil). Then they need to cover the inside of the oiled roll with lots of oregano. Then they add the meat and cheese (be sure to ask for the "Italian Meats" and "Provolone Cheese".) It doesn't matter if it's Publix meat or Boar's Head meat...

Then add whatever ingredients you like: lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc. Follow it up with a little more oregano. Close the roll, let the flavors mellow, and ENJOY!

It's the closest you'll get to a Philadelphia Amoroso roll hoagie!
