I agree it's an atrocity and to be expected, if you understand their motives. The muslim religion, along with some others believe that to show victory over your enemies, you must destroy what is sacred to them and replace it with a symbol of your beliefs, in this case, a mosque. There is great symbolism in getting a mosque built at that site.
