you can also buy and install other types of screens - for instance, we get too much morning sun on the east side of our lanai in certain seasons, so we installed one of those roll down screens to filter - helps a lot with the heat. We got the lighter one and you can still see thru it, but not as well.
There was a heavier gauge choice that limits visibility more, but am not sure what it's like at night looking thru from the outside. Lowe's and Home Depot both carry them. Think they come in 8 ft, 10 ft and 12 ft standard widths but can also special order. Starts at under $200 if I'm remembering correctly.
Lots of people have these on their lanais, mostly for sun reasons I think. Ask a neighbor who has one to turn on their lanai lights at night and take a look from outside.
Have also seen on some houses a screen that lets air thru but has some kind of scene on it and appears to be a one-way view from inside?
I think that's different than a Shoji screen.
