The story seems to be moving around from Atlantic City to New York to Chicago.

Not sure how many episodes in this mini series. Sources give different amounts from 8 to 10 to 12 episodes in the First Season. HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for a second season.

I will keep watching it but found the last episode (October 3, 2010) rather boring.
