I have a Kindle and an I-pad. The I-pad works as a reader, but not well. Two major downsides. Battery life. On the kindle you can read a lot for a couple weeks or longer between charges. I-pad it is measured in hours. If you read a lot the back lit I-pad is a problem. The Kindle is much easier on the eyes.
Now for everything else the I-pad is great. It will do everything your laptop will do and is much easier to carry. I really like it. Apple knows how to be user friendly. But if you think it will be a good e-reader, you are making a mistake. Kindle is now down to $139 so I would not use the I-pad as an e-reader except for a very short period of time.
