I've had single disc surgeries at two levels two separate times, and another type of surgery in between. (that even sounds strange to me) All were performed here in VA, but have had very good success. The first was in 1992 and they used a chip of bone off my hip to use for a graft. The last one was in 2009 and the Dr. used a titanium plate to fuse the vertabrae.
I agree with other posters. Find someone that has performed lots of these and do what they tell you. You will feel like you can do things that you are told not to do. DON'T DO IT!! The first thing that comes to mind is driving before you're turned lose.
