Personally, I thought it was time for profiling long before 9/11. Not profiling by skin color or ethnic background but by behavior. We don't train our people to look for physical and psychological signs. So, maybe the thing would be to educate the populance to look out for signs and have them point them out to the authorities. I don't know, but I do agree something other than these outrageous searches needs to occur and needs to occur sooner than later.
BTW -- I'm surprised that surgically implanted devices weren't used many, many years ago. I always wondered if the impediment was that it would give a suicide bomber too long to consider his/her imminent demise and, thus, cause a surrender rather than an explosion. I think there must be something comforting in thinking that you could change your mind and remove a device for whatever reason, thus giving you a choice. Having a bomb implanted gives you no choice.
The other thing that is truly needed is that the people of the Middle East be educated. Too many are illiterate. They are taught a very bastardized, oral version of the Koran. If these people could be educated to better methods of surviving, of actually knowing what is written, of learning there is more to the world, there would be a lot less hate and envy.
