Default Make sure your controller has a freeze protection cycle.

It will have the pool pump come on and stay circulating when the temps go below a certain point.

My controller freeze protection cycle default level is 38 degrees. The reason being the temp sensor is in a protected area and the real outside temp may in fact be lower, start at a little higher temp sensor wise.

The pump will run continuously until the temps get back above the set level.

If you are not doing this you run a significant if not certain risk of a breakage some where in the system.
