I purchased the printer for copying music and the like. (It has a large platen
and is supposed to copy 11x17 material) Or so it says.

My problem is: I purchased a ream of 8 1/2 x 14 paper and I can't get the paper to fit into the trays any which way. The clips are all the way back and to the sides and the paper still hangs out.

Anyone with a Brother 6940CW have this problem besides me? Please let this dummy know what to do. Thank you.

The top paper tray has a little thumb lever about 3/4 of the way over towards the right at the back. You pull back on this little lever making sure to pull from the right edge of the lever. If you try to pull back on this lever from it's center sometimes it bends and does not actually work the lever arm. After pulling this back the paper tray will expand back as you pull back. It has a stop at 14 1/2 inch paper and also at 17 inch paper.
