I needed a little (but not too little) island in my kitchen. I didn't know what size would give me another surface that was large enough for painting and still let me open the cupboards, the fridge & the oven.
This is what I did, and maybe it will help you:
Measure the standard sizes that tables comes in.
Make a paper template of the larger size out of newpaper and tape.
Add templates for the chairs so you can see if you have room to pull them out.
Lay the templates on the floor where you want your table and leave them there for a day or two. You'll be able to tell if the table is the right size or, if you keep stepping on it, you need a smaller one.
