I think you are really going to enjoy being a Villager. Even though Wildwood has a fairly high crime rate and Fruitland Park does too, it does not reach into The Villages. There has not been a violent crime in a long, long time. Last one I remember was a domestic dispute when a woman shot her husband. Both were retired LEO's. One other about 2 years before that was because of a young daughter living at home and involved with drugs. Led to murder. 2 violent crimes in a community of about 80,000 in 4 years is not too bad.
It is a far cry from your part of New Mexico. No need for "packing heat" here at all. Basically only crimes around here are a few break-ins when people are gone for the season. There is also speeding and some DUI's.
It is comical to hear some people complain about the bad element of "roving gangs of teens" on the town squares after 9 pm. These are kids staying with Grandma and Grampa for a few weeks in the summer and don't want to go to bed at 9:30.
You are going to adjust mighty quickly and will love it here.
