Default Catalytic Converter

I'm picking your brains again because I get such good and sensible advice! One day on our last week in NC before moving to TV my check engine light came on in my 2004 Crysler Pacifica with 122,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and he said the catalytic converter was not working and it would cost approximately $1,000 to fix it. He further stated that since we were moving to Florida I would not necessarily need to fix it as Florida does not do "inspections". Well, we are here and I do want to sell the car as we do not need 2 vehicles but I doubt it would sell with the problem so I wondered if anyone knew a good "shade tree" mechanic that might do the work and not charge as much as the Chrysler dealer. Hubby says "sell it as is" but I wonder if it should not be fixed. It has been well-maintained, has fairly new tires and gets good gas mileage. Thanks for your input.
