Most people get attached to a message board because they feel that their opinions and observations are valued by others, and because they benefit from information and opinions of other members. If someone, or several, people begin denegrading their thoughts and opinions or attack ad hominem, they will soon tire of the battle and turn to other sources of entertainment. I was once a regular on a sports message board, but as it turned more and more combative and unpleasant, I retreated and seldom browse there anymore.
