Surge Protection/Lightning Protection
The term "whole house" surge protection can be misleading. If your concern is an indirect lightning strike you need to consider a PRIMARY surge protection device on your electric meter by your electric utility (SECO or Progress Energy) - OR - by a licensed electrician on your electric panel.
HOWEVER, you still need SECONDARY surge protection devices on your computer, TV's, mircowave oven, refrig, washer, garage door opertors, irrigation system, telephone answering machines, or any other piece of valuable electronic equipment. REMBER: LIGHTNING LOVES TECHNOLOGY!
If your conern is the far less frequent (but potentially more severe) direct strike to your home you need to consider a lightning protection system (commonly called lightning rods) by a UL "listed" installer.
For more info on lightning see the Lightning Matters columns in the back issues of the POA Bulletin.
