Sad to say, I have never had a real New York bagel. I have had bagels that are boiled before being baked from Chesapeake Bagels in Maryland as well as other places in Maryland.
I personally like the bagels at Panera. I always toast them and like them with butter on them.
I have heard that a bagel perfectionist will never toast a bagel. Is that true and, if so, why?
