In selecting a surgeon I think that the team and experience are more important than class rank. You want to pick out a hospital where they do lots of the procedure. You want to be in a place where you might be treated like a piece of meat on a conveyor belt. Where they do hundreds a year of the procedure that you are having done.
Statistics for some procedures show that the outcome improves even after the surgeon has done it 1000 times.
I do think that education is important. The last surgeon that I went to didn't post his class rank on his wall.
He did post paper from Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital and had a great team.
