Unless the trimmer you have is a professional quality piece (ie. several hundred dollar type of thing), you're probably going to be better off just ditching the problematic one and buying something new. Found this out myself a number of years ago with a leaf blower.

However, the issue could be something really simple/easy to fix - might at least be worth having a repair shop take a quick look at it.
